Stunning systems by Carbon dioxide (CO2) for pigs are essential in any new line or renovation of a pig slaughter line. The main reason is the quality of the meat that this system achieves, thanks to the decrease in the pH of the meat, which translates into an improvement in the PSE index of the same.

This system also removes petechiae from the meat, while preventing the breakage of backbones and hams. A correct handling of the animals, according to the Mecanova instructions, reduces the stress of the animal, and facilitates compliance with the European Animal Welfare Regulation CE No. 1099/2009 of the European Council.

CONDITIONS OF USE

According to the design, it is intended for the slaughter of pigs weighing between 50 and 350kg in an industrial procedure.

The production of this machine will depend on the weight of the animals, being 120 every hour for 100kg animals with a time to bleeding of 30 seconds, the machine must perform cycles with 6 pigs to achieve that production.

KEY PARAMETERS

• • The CO2 concentration at the start point of stunning must be greater than 80% (we recommend 90%).
• • The time for the animals to descend to the point of maximum concentration must be less than 30 seconds (we recommend 20 seconds)
• • The exposure time at the maximum concentration will depend on 2 variables:
  • 1. The concentration of CO2
  • 2. The time until bleeding of the last animal to leave after each cycle.

The time spent at maximum concentration and the percentage of concentration of the gas will affect the time of unconsciousness of the animal, and the machine must be operated in such a way that each animal is given a time and concentration that allows a time of unconsciousness. enough for him to bleed to death without regaining consciousness.

Functionality

The immobilization operation of pigs to be stunned requires stunning boxes designed for this task, complying with the animal welfare regulations.

This equipment requires a previous individual tunnel of conduction and access to the box, and a bleeding table after the process. For the stunning work, it is recommended an electrical equipment with impedance control and data recording that comply with the regulations. The animal accesses the box from the tunnel thanks to a sectional door, which leads it to the box. The box does not include a built-in floor, so it is made of concrete, and so it is the floor of the tunnel of conduction, giving the animal security, and  facilitating its entry, stunning and subsequent exit.

The design of the equipment allows the animal to be held by a pneumatic side door that, while it’s being controlled by the operator, presses on it, immobilizing the animal. The Mecanova Stunning Box allows an easy access to the stunning point with tongs. The exit of the animal is quick thanks to the fact that the same door that immobilizes it is raised, releasing the animal and letting it fall on the bleeding table.

This prevents the animal from being damaged or suffering, and thus eliminating petechiae in the meat and breaking ribs and spines, ensuring compliance with animal welfare.

functionality

The restrainer is the ideal machine for the conduction and electric stunning of pigs (by electronarcosis). The complicated task of driving the animals in the facilities with electrodes is notably facilitated with a restrainer, since it picks up the animals at a zero level, and drives them automatically, raising them to a level of 1.1 meters. This equipment is ideal for stunning with tongs and subsequent discharge onto a bleeding table.

The 'V' conveyor belts, in addition to driving comfortably and with less stress, immobilize the animal, positioning it optimally at the stunning point. The restrainers are suitable for animals of very different weights and sizes, although they can be adjusted both in their separation and the height of the upper protective roof, a necessary element to prevent the animals from trying to climb over each other.

For the restrainer, a conduction tunnel is necessary prior to the machine and a bleeding table for the exit of the animal from it.
